Dr. Patrick J. Buchanan earned his medical degree from the University of Florida College of Medicine and completed a research fellowship at the University of Michigan. He is on staff at Memorial Health University Medical Center as well as St. Joseph’s and Candler Health System. He is also a clinical assistant professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at Mercer University.
Dr. Buchanan specializes in hand and wrist surgery, as well as breast reconstruction, body contouring and facial plastic surgery. He has authored over 50 scientific papers, including textbook chapters, and is a peer reviewer for three scientific journals, including Nature-Scientific Reports. Dr. Buchanan stays on top of the latest innovations and technologies in the industry through his membership in various organizations, including the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and the American Association for Hand Surgery.

Dr. Buchanan specializes in hand/wrist surgery, microvascular surgery, breast reconstruction, and aesthetic surgery. He performs bony repair of all hand and wrist/distal radius fractures, as well as reattaches amputated fingers and repairs damaged nerves and tendons. He is well versed in microvascular surgery, including DIEP flaps for breast reconstruction, and aesthetic surgery including breast augmentations and tummy tucks.

Dr. Buchanan is on staff at Memorial Health University Medical Center and St. Joseph’s / Candler Health System. He is also a Clinical Assistant Professor of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Mercer University.
Dr. Buchanan has authored over 50 scientific papers, including textbook chapters. He was awarded a grant to study a novel approach for harvesting a vascularized bone flap in the dorsal decubitus position. He has given multiple presentations at the national level and his research is regularly cited on the plastic surgery training exam. Dr. Buchanan is an innovator and is also a peer-reviewer for three scientific journals, including Nature-Scientific Reports.
Dr. Buchanan proposed to his wife, Andrea, on Saint Patrick’s Day at The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in 2018. He was recently elected to serve on the Cathedral Parish Pastoral Council. Dr. Buchanan has already formed so many precious life memories here in Savannah, including becoming a member of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. He enjoys being outdoors, fishing, playing golf, and tennis. He is a former nationally ranked tennis player and hibachi chef.
