Am I a Rhinoplasty Candidate?

Rhinoplasty may be performed in both men and women. The candidates for rhinoplasty may select the procedure to help improve functionality, the aesthetic image or deformity of the nose. A rhinoplasty can bring a more refined appearance to your nose and add balance to your face.

Rhinoplasty Pre-Surgery

Your consultation in our office will help set reasonable expectations for the outcome of the nose reshaping procedure. It is important to inform your surgeon if you smoke or are taking any prescription drugs, over the counter medications, vitamins or supplements. You should especially inform your doctor if you are taking aspirin or other drugs that affect blood clotting. Our surgeons will review your medical history to accommodate for any medical conditions requiring attention before, during or after the procedure. These medical conditions may include, but not be limited to: uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems or the tendency to form excessive scars. Your vision will be tested and you may need to see an ophthalmologist before undergoing the rhinoplasty surgery procedure. You may be required to cease certain medications and/or take other medications prior to and following the procedure. You should feel renewed with a fresh, new look after a rhinoplasty procedure.

If your nostrils are too wide, the surgeon can remove small wedges of skin form their base, bringing them closer together.

Age may also be a consideration. Many surgeons prefer not to operate on teenagers until after they’ve completed their growth spurt-around 14 or 15 for girls, a bit later for boys. It’s important to consider teenagers’ social and emotional adjustment, too, and to make sure it’s what they, and not their parents, really want.

About the Rhinoplasty Procedure

Rhinoplasty procedures are individualized to meet your specific goals. The procedure may be performed in a hospital or one of our state-of-the-art outpatient cosmetic surgery centers, such as our Savannah cosmetic surgery center. Most rhinoplasty procedures take between one to three hours, and are often performed under local anesthesia with sedation medication. The procedure may also be performed under general anesthesia. Most people can usually return home the day of the procedure. The procedure may be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures when necessary.

Incisions are made inside the nostrils or at the base of the nose, providing access to the cartilage and bone, which can then be sculpted into shape.

During the closed approach method of the procedure, small incisions are made inside the nostrils or at base of the nose for easy access to the cartilages and bone which can be sculpted into shape. The skin is then sutured into place with stitches. In the open approach, the columella, which is the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils may be treated. Soft splints and nasal packs may be placed into the nostrils for stability.

Nose Reshaping Post Surgery

You will need someone to drive you home following the procedure and may require assistance with daily living activities for the next couple of days. Stitches are usually removed within seven to 10 days of the procedure. You will not be able to do strenuous activity for approximately one week following surgery, including no work. You will be advised to refrain from saunas and hot tubs for several months.

The surgeon removes the hump using a chisel or a rasp, then brings the nasal bones together to form a narrower bridge. Cartilage is trimmed to reshape the tip of the nose.

Complications may occur with any medical procedure, and can include: hematoma (a blood clot), infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. Yet, complications can usually be managed by your surgeon. In addition, you may feel some temporary numbness after the procedure. Complication risks are reduced by following the pre- and post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon.
