“Stem Cell” Facelift

“Stem Cell” Facelift

Is there really a “Stem Cell” facelift available in United States yet?

The concept is to isolate a patient’s multi potential cells, inject them beneath the skin, and  truly stimulate the rejuvenation of the overlying skin and increase the volume of the underlying tissues leading to a more youthful appearance.

We do “fat injections” to the face and other parts of the body.  It does contain a small amount of stem cells, and it does increase volume and improves the quality of the overlying skin.  It just is not really a true “Stem Cell Facelift” – because it would contain a more concentrated number of the actual stem cells.  There are a few sites in the country working on making them available – but none  yet.

Breast Augmentation After Pregnancy?

The question often arises, “how long after pregnancy can I have a breast augmentation.” This curiosity stems in part from the physiological inflation and deflation of the breasts that women observe during the peripartum period.

As a child grows in-utero the mother’s body prepares to nurture this newborn, and one of the most noticeable responses is enlargement of the mammary glands. When this tissue is functioning to produce milk the breasts continue to have a full, large and robust appearance. It is when the mother decides to stop breast feeding that she experiences the beginning of her breast tissue involution which leaves the breast looking small, and feeling deflated.

We always counsel our patients that our commitment to them is to provide a safe, long lasting result. With respect to providing a durable breast augmentation result, a stable size is essential. We always recommend that patients who have recently stopped breast feeding wait for at least 4 to 6 months after the last feeding or pumping session. This allows ample time for the breast to “dry out” and return to the shape and size that the breast “truly” is.  There are no clear cut studies establishing these timelines so this is our recommendation based on experience, we emphasize each patient is unique. In general plastic surgeons find it more unreliable to plan around a changing part of the body, so when the breast reaches this “settled” time, we can plan for augmentation and expect results that we see in our non pregnant and non lactating patients…thus enabling us to provide a more stable and predictable outcome.

How Much Botox is Right For Me?

Here in Savannah, we typically see patients in our office inquiring about how much Botox is right for them. This is often a result of advertising that offers patients a fixed amount of Botox for a reduced price. As many of you know already, Botox is the trade name for a muscle paralyzing medication that we as  Plastic Surgeons use as an injection to paralyze specific muscles of the face. Once muscles that “contract” are paralyzed the overlying skin lines (wrinkles) often fade or all together dissappear. The effect usually takes anywhere from 5 to 14 days for the maximal effect to be evident, and will last anywhere from 4 – 6 months depending on the person.

The amount of Botox you will need is specific to you as a person. Here at the Georgia Institute of Plastic Surgery, we tailor the amount of Botox injected to your specific needs and goals. If you desire to get rid of forehead lines, crow’s feet or want smoother contour between your eyebrows… then you may need a larger dose. The dose you may need to achieve your desired result is patient specific because everyone has a unique amount of muscle mass.  Its important to consult with your Plastic Surgeon when you are considering any injection or procedure.  We encourage you to call us today for a consultation, 912 355 8000.

Revisional Breast Augmentation Surgery

There is nothing more disappointing than having to have gone through the time, expense, and emotional energy of a breast augmentation – only to be unhappy with the result. There are a few different reasons that the patients are unhappy with their results:

1) Size: Rarely does the patient think they are too large – but up to 25 % of the revisional operation are done to make a patient larger. It is very important to use sizers or other ways to demonstrate to your plastic surgeon what size you want to be.
2) Shape: The final result may be too round, too low, too high, too lateral, too medial. It is not always possible to make the perfect shape: but if you are going to redo your breast – choose a plastic surgeon with a fair amount of experience with this problem.
3) Sag: Often patients with long term implants will start to sag after weight gain and loss, pregnancy, or time. Often a breast lift will be needed.
4) Capsular Contracture: When the breast becomes firm, distorted, or painful. There are good nonoperable and operable techniques for this problem which occurs in 3 – 12% of the patients.
5) Rupture: This is more common in saline implants (6%) and older implants.

Make sure you seek the consultation of an experienced plastic surgeon when you choose to redo your breasts.

Breast Augmentation – What is right for me?

Breast Augmentation is one of the most common procedures performed to help a women feel better about themselves. After helping over 3,000 women either make their breast larger, smaller, or just more even and perky, I have gotten a good understanding about how important a women’s breast are to their self image and happiness.

I actually became a plastic surgeon because someone close to me had a breast augmentation, and it totally changed her personality. She went from a quiet introvert to an outgoing, vivacous individual. I thought -” That is cool!” They were able to change her life through surgery.

Breast implants are nothing more than a volume and shaping device that is placed beneath your tissues in order to get a larger or more shapely breast. When choosing the appropriate size for you, you must realize that your new breast size will be what ever volume of breast you already have plus the amount we add to your breast. You also want to choose a size that you will be happy with now, when you have a child and you are at the PTA meeting and want to carry around when you are 65 years old.

In future bolgs, we will talk about choosing the right implant type, location of implant and incision choice.

Male Gynecomastia (Male Breast Reduction)

More men are coming in to see us in reference to male gynecomastia, so I thought that I would write some information in regards to what are the problems and how do we treat them.
Problems:

1) Breast Bud: A mass that is often tender beneath the nipple areolar complex.
2) Excess Breast Fat: This gives us the overall enlargement of the breast.
3) Excess Skin: The excess sag and skin that is more common with larger breasts.

Procedures Used
Today the most common operation is a combination of pheriperal liposuction with excision of the breast mass through either a scar under the areolar or through the nipple itself. Our goals is to give you the best result with the littlest external scar possible. If there is a lot of redundant skin, it may require a mastopexy or skin incision to make the breast flat.

Most patients are very appreciative of the results.

Latisse – A New Alternative for your Eyelashes

Latisse is a new product from Allergan that is useful for thicker, darker and longer lashes.  It takes two months to work.   Brookes Shields is the point lady in the new allergan adds and is doing a great job of promoting it.

Our early experience has been good.  The product is applied once a day.  Very little side effects have been noted and the lashes are starting to grow.  It makes a great addition to our Savannah blepharoplasty patients to make their eyelids even prettier.
