Breast surgery can come in many forms, including breast augmentation, breast lift and breast reduction. In some cases, both a breast augmentation and breast lift may be performed together to help achieve a fully satisfactory outcome. Breast surgery may be performed to enhance your appearance that may be altered through age, pregnancy, a deformity or asymmetry between the breasts. Many of our patients state that breast surgery is a great way to enhance your image.

Breast Surgery Consultation

Your consultation in our office will help set reasonable expectations for your procedure’s outcome. It is important to inform your surgeon if you smoke or are taking any prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins or supplements. It is especially important to inform your doctor if you are currently taking aspirin or any other drug that affects the blood’s ability to clot. Our surgeons will review your medical history to accommodate for any medical conditions requiring attention before, during or after the procedure. These medical conditions may include, but not be limited to: uncontrolled high blood pressure, blood clotting problems or the tendency to form excessive scars. You may be required to cease certain medications and/or take other medications prior to and following the procedure. These precautions are for your safety and most of our patients feel renewed with a fresh, new look after a breast surgery procedure.

Breast Surgery Details

Breast Surgery procedures are customized to meet your specific goals. The procedure may be performed in a hospital or one of our state-of-the-art outpatient surgery centers. Depending upon your particular situation, most procedures take approximately three hours, and are performed under general anesthesia. The procedure may be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures when necessary. Most of our patients can usually return home the day of their procedure.

Breast Augmentation

During the breast augmentation procedure, your surgeon may make an incision on one of two places: the crease under the breast or under the arm pit. Your surgeon will then place either an inflatable or gel implant above or under the muscle. He or she will then suture your skin back into place. Please visit the breast augmentation page of this website to learn more about this procedure from our Savannah breast augmentation specialists.

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgery, also known as mammaplasty, is performed to reduce excessive strain on a patient’s back which may cause pain, irritation and/or breathing problems. Breast reduction may also help build a patient’s self confidence.

The goal of a breast reduction is to have your breasts be proportionate with your body. Our surgeons are experienced with several different breast reduction techniques. Most commonly, an anchor shaped incision that follows the natural contour of the breast is made. Then, your surgeon will remove fat, tissue and skin to provide appropriate sculpting and close the incision with sutures accordingly. Your surgeon may also reduce the size of the areola. Please visit the breast reduction page of our website to learn more about how Savannah breast reduction patients have benefited from this procedure.

Breast Lift

Breast lift may be performed alone or in conjunction with breast augmentation to achieve a fully satisfactory result. The combination procedure is especially called upon in cases where a breast lift is necessary due to aging or sagging after pregnancy. Visit our breast lift page to learn more about how Savannah breast lift patients have benefited from this procedure.

Post-Breast Surgery Details

You will need someone to drive you home following the procedure and you may require assistance with daily living activities for the next couple of days. Bandages will be removed in a few days and your sutures are usually buried and do not require removal. You will not be able to do strenuous activity for approximately one week following surgery, including no work. You will also be advised to refrain from saunas and hot tubs for several months.

Complications may occur with any medical procedure, and include: hematoma (a blood clot), infection and an adverse reaction to anesthesia. In addition, you may feel some temporary numbness after the procedure. Most complications can usually be managed by your surgeon. Complication risks are reduced by following the pre- and post-operative instructions provided by your surgeon.

Gynecomastia, Breast Reduction for Men

Gynecomastia is the technical term for a condition affecting men in which they appear to have enlarged breasts. Gynecomastia may be caused by a medical condition such as impaired liver function, use of estrogen-containing medications or anabolic steroids.

Pre-Surgery

During the initial consultation in our office, your surgeon may recommend that you see a specialist to identify if a medical condition is the cause of your condition. Once any medical conditions are ruled out, your surgeon will want to know if you smoke or are taking any prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, vitamins or supplements. It is especially important to notify your doctor of you are taking aspirin or any other drugs that could affect your blood’s clotting ability. You should feel renewed with a more comfortable look after a gynecomastia treatment.

About the Gynecomastia Procedure

Gynecomastia procedures are customized to meet your specific goals. These procedures, which typically take one hour and are performed under general anesthesia, may be performed in a hospital or at one of our state-of-the-art outpatient surgery centers. The procedure may be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures when necessary. During the gynecomastia procedure, your surgeon will make a small incision, usually located at the areola, so that a cannula (hollow tube) can provide for liposuction. Then, the glandular tissue must be cut out usually through a small incision near the edge of the areola. Finally, your surgeon will close the incision with sutures. Most people can usually return home the day of the procedure.
